Cervicothoracic Manual Therapy

Cervicothoracic Manual Therapy

Manual therapy for tension and prominence at the base of the neck

A visible prominence at the cervicothoracic junction – where the neck meets the upper back – may occur together with forward head posture, rounded shoulders, reduced thoracic mobility and chronic tension in the neck and shoulder area.

The therapy does not focus solely on intensive massage of the visible prominence. It is a comprehensive manual approach to the cervicothoracic region and related structures, individually adapted to the nature and possible causes of the problem.

The session may include myofascial techniques, manual therapy, deep tissue work and, when appropriate, vacuum cupping therapy. Treatment can involve the neck, upper back, shoulder girdle, chest and thoracic spine.

The goals of the therapy include:

  • reducing excessive muscular and fascial tension,
  • improving mobility of the neck, shoulders and thoracic spine,
  • improving tissue mobility and elasticity,
  • reducing stiffness and tension in the neck and upper back,
  • supporting better positioning of the head and shoulder girdle,
  • gradually improving the appearance of the cervicothoracic area.

We do not work only with what is visible. We work with the structures and tension patterns that may contribute to the appearance of this area.

It is important to understand that a visible prominence at the base of the neck is not always caused by muscular tension or posture. It may also be related to fat accumulation or other structural or medical factors, and therefore manual therapy cannot reduce every type of dorsocervical prominence.

This therapy is particularly suitable for people who, in addition to the visible prominence, experience neck and shoulder tension, cervical stiffness, reduced mobility or discomfort associated with prolonged sitting and forward head posture.
